Roy is the Flame Alchemist, his gloves have the alchemy circle sewn on them and they're made of special material, so all he has to do is snap his fingers to produce a flame. Roy is the military man that recruited Edward Elric.
Roy is very good at putting up appearances and very smart (and sneaky! OH that Roy!) The officers at Central don't know how he got promoted and they believe he is incompetent.
But he works SO hard!

You can tell he's great leader by how his subordinates behave. He has extremely loyal subordinates that will support him as he rises to his goal - and will support him in anything that he does. When one of his friends and supporters gets murdered and the evidence leads to a cover-up by the upper military, he's not afraid to find out the truth and to get justice.
He served in the Ishtar War - using his flame. In the anime they went into the war and how it effected him. At one point he was about to kill himself and then shortly after he decided to become the Führer to change the world. In the manga they don't go into that very much.
Edward and Al believe that they're all grown up and don't need adults, but in his own way Roy watches out for them. Goes back to Roy being an awesome leader.
Since Roy is the Flame Alchemist, there is a draw back to his "power". If his hands are wet he can't get a spark. But don't treat him like a wet match!! Actually in the last manga chapter that came out, he was in that situation and he did the coolest thing! Let's just say... yes he can't get a spark but if there's enough water he can use it to his advantage. ^_^ Check out the manga! It's good reading.

Ty-chou: Well, once again, this is a series I'm not too familiar with. I've got episodes floating around my room, but I haven't found time to watch them yet. Only seen the first two. Well, can't say learning about his plans for a miniskirt military makes me like this guy too much. But whatever. Nie-Chan is nuts for him and she is certainly welcome to him, uniform, holster, fire, and all.
No-chan: (2/12/04)Sweet! Roy! Yeah, our Nie-chan is obsessed with him. He's hot, that's for sure. Guess that's what he gets for being the Flame Alchemist. I do like him, even though I've only seen like, the first season of the show, and haven't read the manga.. which is coming out in MAY!! Woot. He's just such a goofball.. I think the blonde needs to punch him the next time he says he is going to make the women wear miniskirts when he becomes Führer, but maybe she's just biding her time... BTW, THANK YOU, Nie-chan, for covering for me this month. Sorry folks, I got hitched..
Pan-Pan: Roy, roy... he is such an awesome character. Not to mention Hot!(in more ways than one!) For the first part of the anime I thought he was such a flat character, but that was before we get to see much about him. Once they started showing more and more of his character and his personality, the more I loved him! He's a great leader, willing to sacrifice for the cause and work hard to get what he wants! He may not have all the bells and whistles and prettiness of most bishounen, but he more than makes up for it with his winning personality(not to mention sexy voice!).(oh yes... yes he does have a sexy voice! ~nie-chan)And last but not least, who doesn't love a man in uniform? *fangirlish sigh* ^-^
